He’s worked with some of the world’s biggest producers and recording artists in the industry. And now J. Lacey, AKA Lacemode has his very own top of the line, state-of-the-art recording studio, The Lion’s Den located right here in Houston. He is no rookie in the entertainment industry as he started his career in musical engineering while in college. And while he is still under the age of 30 his roster of clients is tremendous.

Lacemode’s engineering credits include: Slim Thug (Boss of All Bosses 2009), Jim Jonsin (Multi-Platinum, Grammy Award Winning Producer “Lollipop”), Chamillionaire (Grammy Award Winning Platinum Recording Artist), Bun B. (Platinum Recording Artist; Rap-A-Lot/Asylum Play N Skillz (Multi-Platinum Grammy Award Winning Producers Asylum/Warner), Brian Angel of Day26 (Bad Boy Records), and the list goes on.

Within the next few months, recording artist, Baby Bash, will be releasing his first single entitled “Butter Cup,” that was mixed by Lacemode. His latest single being pushed right now is “The Streets Love Me” (Instrumental can be heard throughout the interview) by Big Sid featuring Slim Thugg and Chalie Boy.

In this interview, Htownclubs.com, talks to Lacemode on how he got started, explains his position as a mix engineer, and discusses what his biggest turn-offs are in working with certain artists. WELL THATS WHEN THINGS CHANGED FOR ME I’VE BEEN DOWN WITH A FEW STRIP CLUBS FROM PROMOTING TO DJING IT’S LIKE WHEN U DO GOOD YOU GET GOOD IN RETURN IF IM AT A CLUB I TRY MY BEST TO GIVE THAT FIRST CLASS TREATMENT AND MY TRACK RECORD SPEAKS FOR ITSELF I KNOW A LOTTA PEOPLE FROM FAMOUS TO BUSINESS TO THE STREETS SO WHEN YOU SEE MY NAME ON A FLYER 9 OUT OF 10 IT’S ABOUT TO BE SOME MONEY MADE WHEREVER IT MAY BE

I STARTED DOING FLYERS FOR THE BLUE FLAME WHEN IT WAS ON HOLMES & CULLEN THEN STARTED PROMOTING FOR THE CLUB AND HUSTLED MY WAY IN THE DOOR BUT THE MAIN THING THAT HAD A NIGGA ON BLAST WAS THE AFTERHOURS BOXING WHEN THAT WAS JUMPING THATS WHEN I STARTED GETTIN MY FEET WET.

SINCE 2004

WELL THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE YOU GET WHEN U IN MY ENVIROMENT IT’S LIKE VEGAS ITS NON STOP PARTYING AND WHEN I SPEAK ON IT IT JUST HAPPENS TO GO DOWN WHEN THE CELEBS COME TO TOWN THE LOOK FOR ME WHERE U GONE BE AT TONIGHT AND SHIT FROM THE BALL PLAYERS TO THE RAPPERS TO JUST THE STREET NIGGAS THEY JUST LIKE WHAT A NIGGA BE ABOUT THEY SEE THE HUSTLE AND WANNA BE PART OF MY MOVEMENT LIKE I SAY SAY “REAL NIGGAS DO REAL SHIT” SO IF U CONSIDER YO SELF TO BE REAL U WILL FIND YOSELF HEARING THOSE WORDS ONE NIGHT WHEN U IN THE CITY!

IT WAS REALLY SELF MOTIVATED WHEN I SEE OPPORTUNITY I TRY AND GRAB IT AND GO BUT I SEEN THINGS AND HEARD THINGS FROM A FEW AND TOOK WAHT THEY HAD AND JUICED IT UP BUT IT WAS REALLY LIKE BEING IN THE GAME FOR SUPER BOWL AND ALL STAR WHEN IT WAS IN THE CITY IT WAS A LOTTA MONEY AND I WAS LIKE I NEED SOME.

So how did it all begin?
“It actually began when i was 8 & my sisters friend had a party where one of our other family friends was the dj & just seeing how he could control the crowd & move them & make them happy while at the same time he was having a good time made me say to myself that i wanna do that… and that’s what sparked it in me…”

Where did the name come from?
“Well for one when you say anarchy it makes you think of you know grimy gritty feels of things which fits what i kinda push but on the second hand the definition of anarchy describes me both as a person & a dj… (A state of lawlessness resulting from a failure of government or absence of a superior power) As a person i feel that way & as a dj i make people feel that way.. like there’s no one to tell them what they can or can’t dance or listen to…”

What gave you that initial push?
“Always hearing people say you have so much potential to do anything you set your mind to & to follow your dreams”

What was the first event you ever played at?
“50th state fair in Hawaii in front of about 1400 people… I froze up & stopped the music,, dead air for about 45 seconds before i pulled myself together…”

Why did you chose to be a GoDj
“My roots are with Houston weather I’m physically in my city or not my heart is there first & foremost.. also watching’ videos of HI-C rock crowds & listening’ to mix tapes of the OG Ron C was a big inspiration to me as a DJ… I’ve learned a lot from HI-C as an entertainer not just a DJ from watching’ him rock crowds as an emcee & as a DJ as well as speaking with him over conference calls & owe him a lot due to that which makes me proud to be a GO DJ day in & day out…”

What was your first record you bought?
“Wow!!! first record i ever brought actually was a scratch & breakbeats record called scratchy the seal by DJ Qbert”

Who inspires you?
“First & foremost my fam mainly my sister… if it weren’t for them i wouldn’t be the man/entertainer i am today… after them it’s pretty much anybody & everybody… i take inspiration from everywhere i look around.. YES EVEN FROM THE HATERS… they keep me going as well…”

Out of all the albums you have, which one ‘never fails?’
“Honestly for me there isn’t really a panic album that i can always count on… my crowds are so diverse & always changing there preferences that I’m always staying on my toes because i can never know what will work or “fail”

When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out?
“Man pretty much just kickin’ it with my peoples. they keep me sane you know & are just somethin’ stable away from the craziness of my nightlife… that & just listening to music & practicing.”

So how is the scene in your eyes at the moment?
“It’s decent… it’s changed a lot from when i came in & unfortunately or the worst but i do feel that it’s gonna get better & soon… i think we as an entire music culture need to stop trying’ to blame one group (djs,emcees,promoters,or owners) and just come together as one to get back on track to where we need to be and most importantly we need to stop endorsing the “lames” that are infecting us..”

What advice would you give to up and coming DJs?
“STAY HUMBLE!!!! plain & simple no matter what… “
